HKPN義工英文老師有感
Early 2021, I was introduced to HKPN and had the opportunity to become an English tutor for HKers who are new to US, Canada & UK. They recently left HK hastily not by choice, but to escape the thuggish regime since the 2019 democracy movement. These HKers often do not have the right resources to start new life in an unfamiliar country. Language barrier is the first obstacle and the English tutoring program organized by HKPN is a stepping stone for the new comers. Through this program, students were able to learn the ABC’s of the language, cultural norm, basic life skills, etc, whether they plan to further education, find a job, or adapting to new environment. My role as a teacher has allowed me to share my experience & knowledge with the students so they don’t have to waste time navigating the unknown and be able to adapt more quickly. In just about half a year, most students have shown less reliance and be able to navigate confidently on their own. By lending a friendly hand to these new comers, we HKers can build a stronger community through this program. It has been a privilege & a rewarding experience for me, be the person I wish I knew when I first came to the US. I sincerely hope more HKers will join our team of volunteers, to expand this meaningful effort to protect & nurture the seeds of HK culture.
