Tim’s Story

This week’s interview features Tim, who works in IT management. He moved to the U.S. 20 years ago, studied computer science at Virginia Tech, and currently lives in the DC area, in Northern Virginia. Read on to see how HKPN has helped him with his career!

What do you do for work?

I work in IT management for a healthcare company, overseeing four teams. My job consists of helping my teams solve problems, escalate problems to management, and plan initiatives around 6 months to a year in advance. It’s all about allocation, prioritization, and resource management. I enjoy my job because I feel a sense of accomplishment whenever I’m able to help someone solve their problems.

What were some challenges you faced when you first arrived in the U.S.?

It was quite a huge culture shock when I first arrived here. I had to improve my English very quickly and become more open-minded, since I had to interact with people from all around the world. I wish I knew that studying English in school or learning English from a book is very different from actually interacting with people face-to-face in English. I think it boils down to being a bit braver to reach out to people and start a conversation.

How has HKPN helped your career?

Since I’ve joined the HKPN community, I’ve helped host several workshops, including one about interview preparation and skills. From one of the workshops I attended, I met someone who told me about a job position at their company. Although it was a different industry from my job at the time, which was IT development in the banking sector, I took the plunge, applied, and got the job. So I have to thank HKPN for connecting me with my mentor and my new career!

What advice do you have for Hongkongers who are new immigrants to the U.S.?

Keep an open mind and don’t be shy. Don’t be scared. Nobody will laugh if you speak poor English—it’s worse if you stay silent or hide. Find the courage to present your ideas! Also, your youthful years in your early 20s are very precious. I encourage you to spend your time making friends and exploring new activities, hobbies, or even places.

What is a fun fact about you?

I love basketball! I play 2-3 times a week, which sounds like a lot, but is still way less from before, when I didn’t have children yet. My favorite player is Derrick Rose because even though he didn’t get to the very top, he still kept his hardworking ethic and mentality.

What are your future plans?

Well, as a parent, I just want my children to grow up and become good people. At work, I’m hoping to explore my leadership skills.

But I think a huge goal of mine is to help Hongkongers in the U.S. who may be interested in the IT industry. I want to be a mentor and share my experience with others.
